Friday Discussion – What’s Holding You Back?

by Mike on May 21, 2010

Yeah, you heard me.  What’s holding you back?

Why aren’t you doing what you want?

Let’s address a couple in a quick, so not in-depth enough, flippant manner.

Fear of failure. Learn from it and try again.

Waiting for the “right time.” It’s now.  (The “right time” will never come).

I’m not an “expert.” There’s people that know less than you about ____.  Help them!

Everyone says I can’t do it. They’re wrong.

I could go on.  And on.  And on.

Here’s what I think.

What’s holding you back is that change is difficult.

Making changes.  Going against what’s “expected” of you.

Difficult.

Why change when you can just hang in front of the TV?  (Confession: the season finale of Community is playing while I write, and it is out-standing)

Why change when there’s all these other blogs you can check out?

Why change when you can read everything that comes out about how successful other people are, and how they did it?

Why actually change when you can just buy the latest info product that tells you how to change, and pretend you’re going to follow that advice, but really, you’re just going to buy another one next week and let them clog up your hard drive?  (If you’re this person, let me know, because I’ll set up some affiliate links just for you…)

Yes – change is going to be difficult.

But is it more difficult than looking back at your life and realizing you spent 40 years (or more) doing something you didn’t absolutely love?

The sooner you make the change and go after what you want, the more time you have to enjoy it.

So, what’s holding you back?

Everyone has fears – maybe we can conquer them right here.  So here’s the discussion:

What fears are keeping you from chasing your dreams?

What “easy” things can you pass on or lessen so that you can focus on what you really want to do?

Let me know in the comments!

The one thing that's holding me back is self-confidence. In my mind I know I can do the things I want to but acting on them is hard for me.
In my mind I am so confident talking in front of people but then when I am actually in front of them that confidence is lost. I can't say the things that I would like to say and quickly end what I have to discuss.
