Pursuit of Change v.2 – The New Scope

by Mike on October 12, 2010

First of all, I’d like to thank every one of you who takes the time to read Pursuit of Change.  It means a lot that you take a few minutes of your time to read what I’ve put out there, and it keeps me going every day.

This decision is something I’ve been thinking about for the past days and weeks.

I’ve been struggling to keep the laser focus of Pursuit of Change as motivation and self-work for achieving your goals.

While that has been the case thus far (besides some ill advised posts a few months back… ew.), I feel like that has actually been a disservice.

Self-work is a big part of making any sort of major change.  It’s probably the most important part – defining your goals and changing your mindset.

But it’s really only the first step.

I’m going to be expanding the scope of Pursuit of Change to include more of the topics I’m researching and putting into action in my own pursuits.

Two new topics I’m going to cover:

Online Business/Lifestyle Design

For me, this is the key to the change I want to make.

I want to be location independent.

I don’t want to be tied down by office or store hours, or even by the time zone I’m in.

I don’t want to have to cut my vacation short to get back to an office.

I’m not expecting or promising a life free from hard work – it’s just that I want that work to be on my own terms.

I want that work to fit into the lifestyle that I want.  Not a lavish lifestyle, but one with more freedom than I currently have.

I’ve got a goals post that I’m working on that will really lay this stuff out there – coming soon.

Part of this is marketing, part of this is networking, part of this is blogging.

However, it’s not really my goal to turn into another make-money-online site.  There are plenty of those out there.

What I’d like to achieve here is to talk about what I’m doing, and what’s working and not working.  Hopefully give you some ideas and help however I can.

Minimalism

Kind of an offshoot of lifestyle design.

I believe the less stuff that’s around, the more agile you can be.

I spend hours and hours keeping the house organized, doing huge loads of laundry, basically dealing with stuff.  It’s time for that to go away.

I’m not advocating a completely sparse existence, devoid of any material goods.

If there’s a TV show you really enjoy, watch it.  If you’re really into video games, play them.

I don’t believe these things are inherently bad.  They’re great if we’re mindfully spending time on them.

Rather I’m after truly defining the things that give me joy in life and eliminating everything else.  Really drilling down to what is necessary.

Decreasing the amount of time I spend on things for no reason at all.

———

So that’s the plan.

I’ve got some fun stuff coming up soon.

Starting an interview podcast (first interview is done, and I’m scheduling a few more before I officially kick it off).

More sharing of stuff I find helpful, more consistent writing.

Thanks for sticking it out with me!  If there’s anything I can help with or anything you’d like to hear about – please let me know in the comments or connect with me on Twitter!

Great plan for moving forward, Mike.
I recently underwent a repositioning myself and have settled into a comfortable groove which has me excited about the future.

I wish the same for you, and I’m sure you have some great things planned as well. Keep pressing forward, man.

I’ve been watching the minimalism movement from my decidedly non-minimalist position. Lifestyle design, to me, means having a life designed my YOU. We just finished building our dream home — because we WANT to “location dependent.” :)
